Owner: Matthew J. D’Anca, Sr.
Artist/Shop/Place: Jade Dragon Tattoo, Chicago
Location: Left Shoulder
Description: A tribal design from a book on the wall
Story: Because he had a custom tattoo he wanted, Matt went to Jade Dragon to get a piece of “cool, simple art” to have his first ink experience prior to paying for custom work. When he first met the artist, she asked if he was getting his first tattoo. When he confirmed, she said excitedly, “I love poppin’ virgins!” When she began the line work, he thought it felt alright. About halfway through, her co-worker began talking about the artist’s recent breakup. The longer she talked, the harder she pushed, the worse Matt felt. He didn’t say anything, as being a man, he didn’t want to piss her off when she was already angry about men. About 45 minutes later, his girlfriend noticed he looked green. Upon hearing this, the artist finally looked up at him, and with surprise asked, “Are you okay?” He told her it had been getting worse the entire time she talked about her ex. She laughed, shrugged her shoulders and nonchalantly replied, “Yeah...”

Artist/Shop/Place: Aaron Nieman, Las Vegas
Location: Upper Back
Description: A tree, similar to a baobab that is beginning to bloom, representing the owner’s journey in life. A “J” and an “L” are cleverly placed in the base of the tree for her parent’s initials, as they gave her roots. A heart and a peace sign complete this piece and capture her attitude about life.
Story: “I got my first tattoo when I was 28 years old. I remember the artist asking in surprise, ‘This is your first tattoo?’ I smirked and said, ‘Go big or go home, right?’”
